In stressful times, the Calm app can become a real lifeline to soothe anxiety.

The App That Calms

Periods of lockdown or intense pressure sometimes put morale to the test. You then need to find ways to take your mind off things and recharge. Beyond walks in nature, the Calm app provides valuable help. It supports you day to day to reduce stress and anxiety.

Sleep More, Stress Less, Live Better

Calm ; The App

Calm was founded in 2012 by two Britons, Michael Acton Smith and Alex Tew. The English version quickly became a huge success. The app is now available in several languages, including French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Korean and Japanese.

Like any app, Calm can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play Store. On opening, it asks how it can help. Just tick the most suitable suggestions. Signing in by email is then offered, but is not mandatory. A paid offer unlocks all the content. It is, however, possible to skip it and discover the free version.

Once launched, the app starts with a soothing soundtrack. The content is organised into several sections:

  • For You: a personalised selection, based on the answers given when opening the app.
  • Sleep: sleep stories, meditations, music and soundscapes, available offline.
  • Meditate: step-by-step guided exercises in various categories, with progress tracking.
  • Music: instrumental tracks created by Calm or by selected artists, mostly reserved for the paid version.
  • More: check-ins, breathing exercises and a section specially designed for children.

Calm ; Not a Random Choice

A simple internet search on how to relax often leads to Calm. Its ads on social media also catch the eye. The Sleep section is particularly appealing. For a whole generation of French speakers, the stories told by Marlène Jobert lulled their childhood. Finding stories read by her daughter, Eva Green, in the app therefore sparks curiosity. Her deep, calm voice is perfectly suited to the exercise. The other narrators are just as captivating.

The Scenes section is a real treat. Ocean waves, rain or a crackling fire accompany reading or a moment with your eyes closed. These ambiences also set the rhythm for work, as background noise. With an account, the app can also be used on a computer, from the website.

Review of This App

Calm for Life

The free version is a nice introduction for anyone wanting to escape. The sample offered is complete enough to form your own opinion. The only regret: the Music tab remains largely reserved for the paid version. A seven-day free trial does, however, let you test the full app. Several subscription plans exist depending on your needs. Their prices remain reasonable given the work and quality offered. On computer as on smartphone, Calm quickly becomes an everyday companion.

To take care of yourself differently, the Body Pass (in French) offers treatments at gentle prices and Microbiote Friendly (in French) beneficial cooking.
