Betjeman and Barton ; From Paris to Carouge
The house’s story begins in Paris, just after the First World War. More than a century later, its know-how can be discovered as far as Geneva.
A Bit of History
It all begins with Arthur Betjeman, a relative of the famous English poet Sir John Betjeman. After studying the art of tea in Dublin and London, he opened “The English Tea House” in Paris in 1919. In 1927, he hired Percy Barton, who then became his partner. Together, they gave birth to the house of Betjeman and Barton. Their ambition was to bring the elegance of English tea to the French capital. Paris added its own touch, and British refinement met the fantasy of French taste. The result is a subtle balance between tradition and creativity.

Since its founding, the house has had only three directors. In 1978, Didier Jumeau-Lafond, from a great tea lineage, took the helm at the request of Madame Betjeman. He carried on the high standards and innovation, and exported the teas as far as Japan. He also brought together a community of enthusiasts, who in turn became Tea Merchants. More than twenty shops around the world thus continue to awaken palates and celebrate the passion for tea.
