For one summer, it is off on a road trip across Switzerland, discovering little-known regions. A trip in a camper van, a true home on wheels, to explore Swiss landscapes in complete freedom.
Swiss Road Trip ; Freedom in a Camper Van
Six days are enough to cross several regions of the country. From Ticino to Graubünden, then from Lake Constance to the canton of Fribourg, the itinerary holds lovely surprises. Lakes, alpine passes, a national park and unusual visits set the pace of this trip on Swiss roads.
Day 1 – From Lausanne to Lugano via Locarno
A Stroll in Locarno
This Swiss road trip begins with picking up the camper van. A real little home on wheels, generously lent by Elisabeth, a friend. It quickly becomes the ideal companion for this adventure across Switzerland. The departure is from Servion, heading for Ticino.
For this first stage, a stop in Locarno is a must. Set on the shores of Lake Maggiore, this Italian-flavoured town has a gentle, sunny atmosphere. It already contrasts with other regions of the country. Even though the stop is relatively short, it allows a pleasant walk by the water. The landscapes surrounding the lake also deserve a few moments of admiration. A gentle first discovery before continuing on to Lugano.

A Night in Lugano
After this flying visit to Locarno, the road continues to Lugano for this first night in the camper van. Finding a place to sleep is not complicated thanks to the Park4night app. Over the course of the trip, it quickly becomes a true travel companion. Car parks, campsites, parking areas or unusual spots: the app lists many useful addresses. A particularly handy tool for travellers in vans or camper vans.
A little research in the area is enough to find a place to spend the night. For this first stage in Ticino, the camper van finds refuge at TCS Camping Lugano-Muzzano. A pleasant setting to enjoy this first evening on Swiss roads.
Day 2 of the Swiss Road Trip – From Lugano to Zernez
A Visit to Switzerland in Miniature
After this first night in Ticino, the Swiss road trip continues towards Melide. The aim of the day is to discover Swissminiatur. This visit is a way to explore Switzerland from a different angle. The country’s iconic monuments and sites are reproduced there on a small scale.
As you walk around, the models reveal some of Switzerland’s best-known places. Beyond the fun side, Swissminiatur also lets you discover the behind-the-scenes of their creation. Each reproduction is handmade with remarkable care. Meticulous work that showcases Swiss heritage and the diversity of the country’s regions.

A Visit to Monte San Salvatore
After this lovely discovery of Swissminiatur, it is time to gain some height above Lugano. Linked to the city by a funicular, Monte San Salvatore is one of Ticino’s iconic peaks. It offers a spectacular panorama over the whole region.
Once at the top, the show lives up to its reputation. The eye wanders between Lake Lugano and the surrounding mountains. The Ticino landscapes seem to stretch to infinity. With particularly generous weather that day, conditions are ideal for enjoying this break at altitude.
Before exploring the various viewpoints, a stop at the Monte San Salvatore restaurant is a must. The welcome is warm and the Terrazza Capodoro alone is worth the trip. It lets you enjoy your meal while admiring the lake and the surrounding peaks. A simple moment, but hard to forget.

After this break, a few more steps lead to the top of a small tower. From up there, a 360° panorama opens up to visitors. The eye wanders between the mountains, Lake Lugano and the Ticino landscapes. Hard to know where to look, as the scenery seems to stretch on forever. One of those places where you simply take time to admire the beauty of Switzerland.
After the funicular ride down, eyes full of images, the trip continues towards Graubünden. The road crosses the Albula Pass, at an altitude of 2,312 metres. Between hairpin bends, peaks and alpine panoramas, this crossing alone is worth the detour. A magnificent mountain road leading to Zernez, the gateway to the Swiss National Park.

Day 3 of the Swiss Road Trip – Zernez
A Hike in the Swiss National Park
Once in Zernez, all that remains is to find a place to spend the night. As often during this camper van trip, Park4night proves a valuable ally. In the end, the vehicle finds refuge at Camping Cul. The day is already well advanced. So the programme comes down to a little rest by the pool. The next day promises to be more active.
For this third day of the Swiss road trip, it is off to the Swiss National Park. It is one of the most beautiful natural areas in the country. From Zernez, a bus makes it easy to reach the start of the hike.
Once at the foot of the mountain, just follow the signs. The trails cross forests, alpine meadows and rocky landscapes. For occasional hikers, an accessible route of about three hours is ideal. A perfect length to fully enjoy the scenery.
The weather plays along and every turn reveals a new panorama. A simple but particularly pleasant hike. It offers a magnificent glimpse of the park’s unspoilt landscapes and the natural diversity of Graubünden.

After this lovely interlude in the heart of the Swiss mountains, it is back to the Zernez campsite for a second night. One last quiet evening before hitting the road towards new discoveries.
Day 4 of the Swiss Road Trip – From Zernez to Zurich via Maienfeld and Lake Constance
A Visit to Heidi Village
After Zernez, the road heads to Maienfeld. On the programme: one of Switzerland’s best-known symbols, the famous Heidi Village. The story imagined by Johanna Spyri remains above all a tale. Yet it has done much to spread the image of an authentic Switzerland. A Switzerland of mountains, alpine pastures and wide open spaces.
Heidi Village lies today in the heart of the landscapes that inspired the work. The visit lets you meet the story’s iconic characters. It also invites you to discover the history of this book, which has crossed generations and borders.
As you walk around, it is easy to understand why this story still charms. Between alpine scenery and a peaceful atmosphere, the place highlights a certain idea of Switzerland. A simple, warm and deeply endearing Switzerland.

A Visit to the Pile Dwelling Museum in Germany
As the visit to Heidi Village is fairly quick, the itinerary takes a little detour outside Switzerland. Off to Unteruhldingen, on the German shores of Lake Constance. The Pile Dwelling Museum awaits visitors there, a place as surprising as it is fascinating.
The museum offers a walk through wooden houses built on stilts, right by the lake. Some reproductions date back to the Stone Age. Others evoke the Bronze Age. Together, they offer a true journey back in time. Along the way, it becomes easy to imagine the daily life of the region’s first inhabitants.
Once there, the site proves even more impressive than expected. The natural setting of Lake Constance adds a lot of charm to the visit. The reconstructions reveal a little-known chapter of European history. An original stop off the beaten track that adds an unexpected touch to this Swiss road trip.

Crossing Lake Constance by Ferry
After this German interlude, it is time to get back on the road by crossing Lake Constance by ferry. The experience is as simple as it is pleasant. The camper van drives straight on board and all that remains is to enjoy the crossing.
During the crossing, it is hard to resist getting out of the vehicle. The lake’s landscapes naturally invite contemplation. A few minutes are enough to take photos and enjoy this calm moment between two stops.
Even though the crossing is fairly short, it shows Lake Constance from another angle. Once on the other shore, the road continues to the TCS Camping Flaach. The night passes quietly, before heading on towards Zurich.

Day 5 of the Swiss Road Trip – From Zurich to Interlaken
A Visit to Zurich Zoo
After several days among mountains, lakes and wide open spaces, the road heads for Zurich. The scenery gradually changes, giving way to a more urban atmosphere. Even so, the feeling of travelling remains very much present.
A particular reason motivates the stop at Zurich Zoo. It has four legs and spends its days clinging to a branch: the koala. Australia being a bit far away, this visit offers the perfect chance to finally discover this fascinating animal.
But Zurich Zoo is not just about its famous Australian residents. The park is well worth a visit and invites you to travel from one continent to another. The enclosures, themed areas and different worlds make the visit particularly enjoyable.
Among the most impressive installations, the Lewa Savanna holds a special place. With its vast spaces and immersive setting, it almost gives the impression of leaving Switzerland for a few hours. A lovely surprise that adds even more of a change of scene to this Zurich stop.

A Night in Interlaken
After visiting Zurich Zoo, the trip continues towards Interlaken. The scenery changes once again, quickly giving way to more natural landscapes. Crossing Zurich takes a little longer than planned, though. As often in big cities, traffic slows the pace of the trip.
Arrival in Interlaken finally comes at the end of the day. For this last night in the camper van, the choice once again falls on a spot found with Park4night. The car park has a direct view of the lake. A setting as original as it is pleasant to end this adventure.
The night proves a little noisier than the previous ones. But on waking, the landscape quickly makes you forget this small detail. Facing the lake and the surrounding mountains, it is hard to imagine a more beautiful setting for this last morning. A few kilometres away, the Lauterbrunnen valley (in French) offers a lovely getaway for a future visit.
Day 6 of the Swiss Road Trip – From Interlaken to Lausanne via the Lac Noir
A Walk at the Lac Noir
For this last day of the Swiss road trip, it is off to the Lac Noir (Schwarzsee) in the canton of Fribourg. After Zurich’s urban landscapes, the return to the mountains and wide green spaces is particularly welcome. A lovely way to find Switzerland’s lakes and peaks again to end this trip.
Once there, a walk around the lake lets you fully enjoy the setting. The landscapes naturally invite you to slow down and savour the last moments of the adventure. A summer toboggan ride also adds a playful touch to this final stop.
The adventure then continues with the Lac Noir chairlift, which climbs to the Bärghuus Riggisalp restaurant. A combined offer includes the return chairlift ride and the menu of the moment. An ideal formula for gaining height and admiring the Fribourg landscapes.

Once at the top, all that remains is to enjoy the moment. The meal, a few steps along the trails and panoramas as far as the eye can see follow one another. Hard to imagine a better way to end this Swiss road trip.
Around the Lac Noir, the green meadows contrast with the mountainous relief. The blue sky completes this peaceful, almost timeless setting. A setting that naturally invites you to slow down and savour the last moments of the trip.
Nothing more was needed to end this lovely adventure across Switzerland. Magnificent landscapes, lovely discoveries and many memories will remain etched. One thing is certain: this will not be the last trip on Swiss roads. For a next stop, the open-air museum of Ballenberg (in French) brings the Switzerland of yesteryear back to life.
