Chaplin’s World

How the Project Came About

The idea for a major museum dedicated to Charlie Chaplin was born in 2000. It emerged from a meeting between Swiss architect Philippe Meylan and Quebec museographer Yves Durand. The latter was passionate about Chaplin and cinema. Entrepreneurs, artists, local players, architects, engineers and designers came together around the project. The Charlie Chaplin Foundation oversaw its realisation.

Chaplin’s World is the result of ten years of studies, consultations and collaboration with the Swiss authorities. The project won the support of banking and institutional partners, the canton of Vaud and the local municipalities. Tourist and cultural organisations, as well as businesses from the Vaud Riviera, also joined in. The museum finally opened in April 2016.

The Manoir de Ban

Chaplin’s World ; A Unique Site

Charlie Chaplin lived at the Manoir de Ban from 1953 until his death in 1977. Restoring the manor and its park took more than two years of intensive work. The project partners preserved and renovated this intimate place to restore its former splendour. More than 200 contractors, workers and craftsmen took part in this transformation. The project met many challenges, including the architectural integration of the manor. A new building of impressive proportions was also built. The car park blends discreetly between the garden and the forest, and the park has regained all its beauty.
