The Gornergrat ; Zermatt’s Iconic Summit

Among Switzerland’s most famous viewpoints is the Gornergrat. This summit overlooks Zermatt and faces the majestic Matterhorn.

A Valais Summit at Over 3,100 Metres

The Gornergrat towers over Zermatt at more than 3,100 metres above sea level. It offers one of the most spectacular panoramas in the Swiss Alps. The 360° view takes in the Matterhorn, the Dufourspitze and 28 other peaks over 4,000 metres. The Gorner Glacier also unfolds its immense labyrinth of ice between deep valleys. Each season reveals a different light on the mountains. A panoramic trail behind the summit enhances the visit. In summer, alpine flowers bloom and contrast with the rocks and eternal snow.

Gornergrat ; Zermatt’s Panoramic Mountain

The Gornergrat is easily reached from the centre of Zermatt. This train journey is an adventure in its own right.

The Cogwheel Railway from Zermatt to the Gornergrat

Access to the Gornergrat is by a historic cogwheel railway, opened in 1898. The world’s first fully electric cogwheel line, it departs directly from Zermatt. The train crosses Swiss stone pine forests, alpine pastures and rocky landscapes up to the summit station. Several intermediate stops let you get off and hike between stations. From easy walks to more demanding circuits, the trails suit all levels. In winter, the area becomes a playground for skiing, sledging and snowshoeing. Each visit thus becomes a complete alpine experience.

An Alpine Village at the End of the Valais

Zermatt nestles at the end of the Valais, beneath the iconic silhouette of the Matterhorn. The absence of cars creates a peaceful, almost timeless atmosphere. Summer and winter alike, the resort charms with its glaciers, alpine pastures and peaks over 4,000 metres. Skiers and hikers find grand panoramas here. Zermatt also embodies a true art of living. Traditional chalets, elegant hotels, gourmet restaurants and refined shops make up a sophisticated and authentic setting. Spectacular nature blends with a unique gentle way of life. For another iconic Swiss place, Pilatus (in French) offers an equally representative mountain experience.
